FamilyRoots: a private family tree builder

FamilyRoots lets you map your family across generations in the browser. Add people, link parents, children and spouses, and the tree lays itself out by generation. Everything is saved in your browser's local storage on this device — nothing is uploaded to a server, and there is no account.

How to use it

  1. Add yourself first, then use the + button on any card to add a parent, spouse or child — or link someone already in the tree.
  2. Relationship labels (uncle, cousin, sister-in-law) are worked out for you. Use “View as” to see the whole tree from any relative's point of view.
  3. Each family unit gets its own line colour; click a person to highlight their ancestors and descendants.
  4. Search, filter by generation or cohort (Gen Z, Millennials, Boomers…) and open Stats to explore larger trees.
  5. Keep several trees side by side with the tree switcher.
  6. Save a JSON backup regularly — because data lives only in this browser, clearing site data deletes it. Load the backup on another device to continue there.
  7. Export the tree as a PNG image to share, or the member list as CSV for a spreadsheet.

How it's built

Built with React, React Flow for the tree canvas, Zustand for state and TypeScript. The generation and family-graph logic are pure functions with unit tests.
