How to use this tool
  1. Drop in a video (MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI or MKV, up to 50 MB).
  2. Drag the trim handles to pick up to 10 seconds.
  3. Choose WebP or GIF, then a preset: Discord, Social Media or High Quality.

How the Video to Animated WebP/GIF Converter works

The converter runs FFmpeg, the same open-source engine behind most video software, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. The first time you use it, the browser downloads the FFmpeg core (about 30 MB) once. After that, your video never leaves your device: it is read from disk, converted in memory and handed back to you as a download.

You pick a short section of the clip with the trim slider, choose WebP or GIF, and set the width, frame rate and quality. For WebP, FFmpeg encodes each frame with the libwebp encoder at the quality you choose. For GIF it makes two passes: the first builds a custom 256-colour palette from your clip, and the second maps every frame to that palette with ordered dithering. That is why the GIFs look far cleaner than a naive conversion with a generic palette.

Three presets cover the common cases. Discord uses 256 px wide, 15 frames per second and quality 60 to keep files small. Social Media uses 480 px, 20 fps and quality 75. High Quality keeps the original width at 24 fps and quality 90. All presets loop forever. Choose Custom to set each value yourself.

When to use it

  • Turning a screen recording into a short looping demo for a README, docs page or pull request.
  • Making a reaction clip or sticker for Discord, Slack or a group chat.
  • Replacing a heavy autoplay video on a web page with a lighter animated WebP.
  • Converting a private clip you would rather not upload to an online converter.

Tips

  • Prefer WebP when the place you are posting supports it. It is usually several times smaller than a GIF of the same clip and keeps full colour.
  • File size grows with width × frame rate × duration. If a file is too big, lower the frame rate first; 12 to 15 fps still looks smooth for most screen recordings.
  • Trim tightly. Each second you cut saves more than any quality setting.
  • Inputs can be MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI or MKV up to 50 MB, and the selected section can be up to 10 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The only network request is the one-time download of the FFmpeg engine itself.

Should I choose WebP or GIF?

Choose WebP for smaller files and full colour wherever it is supported, which includes modern browsers, Discord and Slack. Choose GIF when you need the widest compatibility, for example older email clients or forums.

Why is there a 10-second limit?

Everything runs in your browser’s memory. Animated images longer than 10 seconds get large quickly and can exhaust memory on phones and lower-end laptops, so the tool caps the selection to keep conversions reliable.

Why does the page reload when I open this tool?

FFmpeg needs a browser feature called SharedArrayBuffer, which is only enabled when the page is served with special security headers. Opening the tool with a full page load makes sure those headers apply.

The conversion fails or the tab crashes. What can I do?

Shorten the selection, reduce the width, or lower the frame rate, then try again. Desktop Chrome, Edge and Firefox handle larger clips better than mobile browsers.
